Kanyashree Prakalpo Scheme is a conditional Cash Transfer benefit or scheme subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions keeping in mind the perspectives of the adolescent girls across the state of West Bengal.

There are several financially backwards families across India, to whom sending their girls to school is considered as a luxury. Yes, you heard it right.

They can not arrange two times food for their families on a regular basis, so how can they afford education which is perceived as a luxury among them.

This condition has led them getting their adorable daughters married even if they don’t attain the legal age of marriage which is 18 years for girls.

It is not that they are all doing this intentionally but out of their needs and financial crisis.

There comes the master-stroke from the Government of West Bengal, in the form of Kanyashree Prakalpa in the year 2013. They just realised how important is this to give an equal opportunity to everyone irrespective of their financial status or social position.

This scheme is This scheme acts as an incentive scheme, like send your adolescent daughters to schools and in return, they will get two types of scholarship, one is yearly and the other one is one time.

This scheme is basically meant for teenage girls between 13 to 19 years of age. If a teen girl fulfils certain conditions, she is eligible for getting the cash transfer benefits in form of scholarship under this scheme.

So, none other than adolescent and unmarried girls will be benefited by this cash transfer scheme only when they are in between class VIII to class XII.

This Kanyashree Prakalpo scheme was launched by the Government of West Bengal for attaining the following objectives:

  • 2. Engaging more and more adolescent girls in the education system,
  • 3. Increase in girl student retention and reducing dropouts,
  • 4. Change in the mindset of the parents of the adolescent girls,

Child marriage leads to trafficking and Kanyashree Prakalpa by so far has been able to control the same to a great extent. The idea behind this Kanyashree Scheme is very much clear.

It focuses mainly on keeping the girl children engaged in school education to college education and delaying their marriages until they attain the legal age of 18 years.

The components of the Kanyashree Prakalpo Scheme is divided into two tiers. Annual (K1) and One time(K2).

  1. An annual scholarship of Rs.1000.00 per year during the age of 13 years to 18 years;
  2. A one time grant of Rs. 25,000.00 when the unmarried girl completes the age of 18 years.

Earlier, the parents whose annual income was below Rs.1,20,000.00 per year, their adolescent daughters used to come under the ambit of this Kanyashree scheme. But recently the income limit is withdrawn by the Govt. of West Bengal.

Now every girl is under its ambit and can apply for this scheme. Is not it great? The Govt. of W.B has brought all unmarried teenage girls who are students under one umbrella. This is called true equality.

What is Kanyashree K1?

To bring more number of adolescent girls aged between 13 to 18 years under the ambit of the education system, the Government of West Bengal provides an annual scholarship of Rs.1000.00 per year to every student of Govt. sponsored schools or part of vocational/technical training courses. This annual scholarship is known as K1.

Annual Scholarship(K1) of Rs.1000.00 is for unmarried girls aged between 13 to 18 years enrolled in class VIII-XII in government recognized regular schools or vocational/technical training courses.

This incentive scheme for educating your adolescent girls has attracted many parents especially in the rural areas of West Bengal.

This ensures that girl students don’t get deprived of the mainstream education system and they feel associated with the other girls of the society of the same age by holding their heads high.

This scheme also ensures that education is for all and even the financially backward class also deserves this.

Now parents don’t consider their daughters as a liability on them and don’t push their daughters for early marriages.

They are very much happy knowing that they can spend at least Rs.25000.00 for their daughters’ marriage.

Irrespective of one’s social status, economic background, if your daughter is unmarried and aged more than 18 years and is a student of Govt. sponsored colleges or part of vocational/technical training courses, is eligible to get this one-time Kanyashree scholarship which is known as K2 for their marriages.

Who is eligible for Kanyashree Prakalpa?

Only unmarried and student adolescent girl is eligible for this Kanyashree Scheme.

They must be enrolled in Govt. sponsored schools or part of vocational/technical training courses. That means she must be a student of a Govt. school and reading in between class VIII to class XII while claiming K1 or annual scholarship.

Further, to claim one-time scholarship or K2, she must be enrolled in a college. She must continue her study in college in order to get this scholarship.

If she discontinues her study after getting enrolled in a college, she would not be allowed to get this cash transfer benefit.
